4 Steps To Losing Belly Fat
Jul 27, 2022A few months ago I was onboarding a client and we had a "come to god" moment.
For the past 3 years his business had taken over his life and in the process, he had gained 25 lbs of fat.
We knew it was fat because he hadn't been working out, he was living a high stress life & eating his emotions.
When we first start working with a client we have them do their initial numbers. He weighed himself, measured his body & did a body fat scan.
We do this because what gets measured gets managed ya know?
When we gave him his BMI he became disgusted.
His body clocked in the red, which meant that he was obese.
His worst area was his belly and I'm not gonna lie...it looked like he was pregnant.
And this is a big problem.
You most likely know that having a big belly is dangerous to your health.
It's why you don't see any obese 80 year olds walking around.
Excess belly fat is dangerous because it surrounds your internal organs. It puts you at greater risk for heart disease, diabetes, and liver damage. It also crushes confidence and energy levels.
Also, in the last email, I explained how dangerous having a big belly is to the brain. It can cause the brain to shrink, reduce blood flow and cause neurological disease.
How would you know if you have a big belly or not?
1) Lie down on your back.
2) Look down to your groin area.
If your belly protrudes farther than your chest does then you have a problem.
So what should you do about it?
I'm going to give you the 4 step formula we use to help our clients eliminate their bellies once and for all.
One thing you need to know is this:
YOU CAN'T SPOT REDUCE BELLY FAT.
(It's so important that I needed to put it in all caps.)
There are no exercises to target the belly. There is no special diet that will magically remove your stomach fat.
If you are to get rid of the fat around your midsection you need to take a whole-listic approach.
One final thing: This is not something you do in a matter of 6 weeks no matter what any fancy marketer will tell you.
There are two phases to getting rid of the spare tire once and for all:
Phase 1 - Elimination
Phase 2 - Sustainability
Phase 1 takes anywhere from 3-6 months.
Phase 2 takes anywhere from 1-2 years.
So keep the long view in mind when you're working on this.
Removing the belly fat will add years back to your life. Possibly decades.
Imagine what you could do with that extra time, energy and vitality?
So, you ready to get rid of your belly once and for all? Let's get to it.
Step 1 - Know your numbers.
This means to bite the bullet and weigh yourself. I prefer daily but if the scale causes anxiety for you do it 1-3x a week.
Measure your waistline one inch above the navel, at the navel, and one inch below the navel. Do this every 1-2 weeks.
What gets measured gets managed and if you don't know your numbers it's like driving to a new destination without a GPS.
Step 2 - Use your diet to burn fat.
Start with simple changes at first:
Trade soda pop for water. Eat whole foods over processed foods. Stick to a meal schedule.
I'd also track what you eat and ensure you're getting at least .8 to 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight.
You'd be surprised at how much food you eat when you start tracking.
Step 3 - Use your workout to build muscle.
The key here is that you want to lose fat while keeping muscle. Also, a pound of muscle burns an extra 4-7 calories. The key to burning more fat is to build muscle.
You do this by lifting weights while using progressive overload.
Progressive overload is a bit nuanced so I did a thread on Twitter to explain what it is and how to do it.
Step 4 - Get at least 6-10k steps a day.
Notice how I didn't say running or doing cardio. You can accomplish this by walking or doing whatever form of activity you like.
Doing this increases what we call NEAT (Non exercise related physical activity).
The more NEAT you get the more calories you burn.
For the most part that's about it.
Of course, there's nuance I'm leaving out and every person is different but that's the gist of it. If you do this for 4-6 months straight you will see your belly fat start to disappear.
It'll seem slow at first. It'll almost seem like it isn't working.
But month 3-4 is where you'll start to see significant changes.
So stick to it. Stop making excuses for yourself.
And remember I'm always here to help when you need it.
Onwards and upwards đ
