It's Day 22 of no alcohol for me and it's been a bit of a revelation.
I've gone 3 weeks without the sauce and even though back then I only had the occasional drink I can feel the difference.
Some observations: I have more clarity, more energy, and I have more control over my emotional reactions. I also have less of an appetite.
I've journaled every day of the process and even my writing has changed. I'm taking my time. I'm not rushing. I've got more awareness than before.
So far it's been a huge benefit to my life and I'm gonna keep on going.
(Btw I've nothing against drinking or people who like to drink. Just giving you my personal observations)
I just uploaded a podcast I did with my friend and attachment expert Adam Lane Smith.
We had a conversation on attachment theory, how it affects our lives, why the world is the way it is, and what we can do about it.
Check that podcast out on iTunes here or on Spotify here.
One of my biggest lessons from letting go of alcohol is learning how to deal with emotions in healthy ways.
We're always going to feel emotions. It's how we react to them that matters.
The less we can numb them and tackle them head-on the better our lives will be.
1 Thing I've Learned
1. The Original Coke
The original Coca-Cola had 3.5 grams of cocaine in each bottle. They've replaced that with 39 grams of sugar in a 12-ounce can.
If there's one thing about this company it's that they love selling addictive substances.
3 Ways to Become a Better Human Being
1. The Ultimate Travel Pillow Hack
The best pillows for your body are ones that are firm and support your neck. Most hotels have soft pillows that force your head to sink.
Bringing your own pillow is a pain in the butt...so what should you do?
Take one large bath towel and fold it into the size of the pillow. Carefully tuck the towel inside the pillowcase. Make sure there are no lumps and it's flat.
This adds more firmness and prevents your head from sinking.
2. Flexible dieting
I've got a client who went to a Halloween event at Disney World. He wanted to eat some candy without ruining his diet.
So we practiced the martial art known as flexible dieting. We budgeted out the calories he could use to "splurge" on his treats.
We also ate in a way to fit those into our daily caloric intake.
He did Disney World and came back a bit lighter on the scale while eating Snickers bars.
The practice here is to budget out what you're gonna eat beforehand. They eat your treat without letting it get out of hand.
This is one of the skills to learn when learning how to diet flexibly.
3. Fast Vs. Slow Protein
An example of fast protein is whey protein powder.
It gives you a high spikes protein synthesis but has fewer amino acids needed to build muscle.
An example of slow protein would be a chicken breast.
It can stimulate protein synthesis for up to 8 hours, it's more effective at reducing protein breakdown and has more amino acids to build muscle.
This is not to say that you shouldn't have whey powders but getting your protein from whole foods sources will always be more efficient.
Client of the Week - Kris Flammang, 49-year-old entrepreneur
Kris is the founder of the LPF Financial Advisors
Before working together he had to take naps at 2 pm due to low energy & found it hard to get rid of the belly.
In 12 weeks we lost 33 lbs and dropped 6 total inches from his waistline. He no longer has to take naps and is more confident in his body than he's ever been in his life.
Our strategy:
· Learning how to eat pizza with his kids while getting lean
· Putting an emphasis on getting on a meal schedule to put hunger on autopilot
· Fixing his sleeping habits so he could have more energy & appetite control
· Focus on strength training over cardio so he can lose fat, not just weight.
The best part is his sons have joined him and have started to learn how to lift and his wife has started to get her body in shape.
Quote to Finish Your Week Strong
"My grandfather rode a camel, my father rode a camel, I drove a Mercedes, my son drives a Land Rover and my nephew will drive a Land Rover but my great-grandson will have to ride the camel again...
Because hard times create strong people, strong people create easy times. Easy times create weak people, weak people create hard times.
Many will not understand, but you must raise the warriors. The same is when you give everything for free to your child who sleeps all day."
- The founder of Dubai Sheikh Rashid when asked about the future of his country.
Thanks for reading. See you next week for more.
Onwards and upwards,
