Is My Metabolism Damaged?
Jul 12, 2022The other day I had a client come to me in a bit of a panic.
For the past few months he had dropped 31 lbs but in the last few weeks his weight wasn't budging despite his best efforts.
After walking him through a series of questions we came to the conclusion that it could be his metabolism.
He asked me if his metabolism was damaged. I told him "no". It's a natural process. Let me explain...
Metabolic damage isn't real.
First, the word "metabolism" is a general phrase for the processes that happen in your body to convert calories into energy.
The reality when you lose weight is that your body adapts.
In simple terms, when your body is smaller it would need fewer calories to sustain itself.
Let me give you an example:
The energy required to maintain a weight of 200 lbs is going to be more than one would need to maintain a weight of 170.
But one of the biggest changes that happen is in something we call Non-Exercise Related Physical Activity aka. NEAT
NEAT is a fancy term for the calories you burn from activities you do that aren't in the form of exercise ie. walking, fidgeting, and living life.
Your NEAT declines as your weight goes down.
Let's use the example of the guy who used to weigh 200 lbs and now weighs 170.
He has less "man" of himself to walk around in. He's not carrying a 30 lbs weight vest on himself 24/7.
This means that the same activity you do at 200 is not gonna burn the same calories at 170 & the amount of energy needed to sustain him at 200 is not needed when he drops 30 pounds off his body.
...And that's okay.
Adaptions occur when you're in a caloric deficit and this is to be expected.
Most of these adaptions reverse once you start increasing calories and eating to maintain your new weight.
This is why we employ the Wave Method with our clients, especially the ones that have more than 30 lbs to lose.
If you've got a lot of weight to lose you don't want to lose it all in one shot.
I'd advise you to do a deficit for 16 weeks, lose a good amount of weight, take a break to let your hormones come back to normal then go after it again.
Doing it this way makes losing weight easy on the body (and mind). It also helps you keep the weight off.
So if this has happened to you remind yourself that your metabolism is not broken.
It's just going through an adaption and it's because you've crushed your weight loss goals.
Don't panic. Be proud.
